Well I don't recall ever doing any of the problems listed, but I will agree that it's very hard to communicate with the vocal elitists on the site (and there are a lot). I usually just add people as a friend if they're cool so if I want to talk to people I don't have to worry about the general community.

@Manaban I havent been in the forums for too long but are the mods this unnefective?I aways see thereads getting merged and users telling their storys of getting banned.Maybe they also like the forum being pro free speech and only act when its needed.

Idk man, I've never had any run-ins with the mods. Don't report anybody and I haven't gotten in trouble myself yet. I see them locking listing threads and stuff I know that @SuperRed at the very least has had threads deleted, and even got banned for really inoffensive things afaik

I know people have complained about it before, though, taka-tin is not the first to say something like this, but I do sort of feel there has been enough activity from the mods myself tbh, maybe even too much in some circumstances, even if there aren't that many

Making fun of someone's favorites is a serious crime round these parts, just ask @Swagernator.

Well I just came into this community, I really don't know much about it Q_Q is it true that people are that mean here ?

MAL is known in anime community to have many users who are less than polite, to put it mildly.

You will not see that kind of behaviour often present here on more strictly moderated forums like ANN’s forum for example. At least not for long. Not all users are like this and there are users here that have something interesting to say and are nice, but due to the number of trolls looking for them is sometimes like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I don’t think that it is so easy to get banned on more strictly moderated forums. I have been on some and I was involved in heated discussions there and I have never got banned.

Maybe that’s because, while I can tell straightforwardly that, for example, I think that a character in a story is an idiot or that I think that anime X is awful, I have never told people with whom I disagree that they are idiots/awful for liking this character/anime or that they are trolls and I have never told people who have different taste from my own that they have shitty taste, just because it is different. In fact, very often I have a good opinion of my interlocutors.

However, from what I have noticed some people seem to have difficulty in recognizing the line between criticism of an anime/character/etc. and insulting another person.

@NihilisticLoner I can only tell you and others who feel similarly that it is pointless to change MAL. If you want more civil discussions, you can find a more strictly moderated forum where such behaviour is not tolerated.

A different forum I'm on has moderation so strict that if you even remotely imply that your views are different, you immediately get the warn hammer.
Heard from a gal who is more active than me that somebody got banned for saying that the older season of a show was better than the newer one.
Politics wise it's even worse. You can't have an opinion.

With that in mind, so far I'm enjoying MAL for not being nearly as stuck up as that place.

I have never met with something like this. This sounds like badly moderated forum to me if they truly ban just for having a different opinion.

@NihilisticLoner

My first post on the whitewashing thread was this.

I thought the thread was simply bait especially after reading through your replies. Clearly, I was wrong and you really wanted answers. I found that out in the animation thread and we even had a fairly proper conversation. You even felt somewhat bad in the end.

The problem is how you present yourself, and I do think you need to probably look at your own faults and fix those too. Now with that said there are some pretty volatile people in these threads but me simply saying your thread was bait wasn't even a mean comment compared to others straight up calling you names. I even made a fairly valid point with L being black in the live action Death Note movie.

Long story short if everyone is treating you the same way it usually isn't about the majority of people but how you act as a person.

@Lain666 Well I was not talking strictly about anime discussion, by different opinions I meant political stuff.Sometimes when discussing anime, or any other form of media, the discussion can lead to that.I feel like saying stuff like what DejWhoa said in his last post on this theread could get you banned in some places, even if it is just a joke.

I honeslty cant say no to jokes, its just people wanting to have fun.Its the internet, you're not supposed to take everything seriously anyway. There is aways those threads asking why there is so much of X in anime and its away good fun to see the "Watch better anime" or "Get better taste" replies.Or the threads questioning why people like X and then theres aways the replies who go on OP's profile and call them out on liking Y or Z, its hilarious.I dont want to see those banned.

And honestly if you think mal is being mean to the OP of this thread you probably havent been to his past threads or read the posts on this one calling him out.

I think that's more common in smaller, isolated communities that people treat as safe spaces and any dissent is seen as endangering that safe space so they basically censor the shit out of anyone that doesn't adapt. For example I heard some girl who created a fujo community was banning people from her site for questioning that her favorite random Yaoi pairings from battle shounen were really CANON. Which they objectively speaking just aren't. But the internet gives people the power to literally deny reality by banning everyone who doesn't go along with their little fantasy or preference and people happily use that power to maintain their escapist safe spaces.
I probably regret this post by now.

That kinda summarizes up nicely how every one of OPs discussions I ever had with him or observed him have with others went. He knows what he wants to hear, and if he doesn't get it he starts throwing a tantrum and blaming everyone else for not saying exactly what he wants to hear (which they obviously only do because they misunderstand him, because noone could disagree with him if they only understood).
If you don't say what he wants to hear (basically backing up his pre-existing opinion) he'll usually just completely deflect or quickly lose interest in interacting with you most of the time.

Indeed. I don't get how he doesn't see you can't get a good discussion this way. At least try to learn something out of those comments even if you disagree.

I can tell just be the attitude conveyed and the random ANGER capitalisation that the OP has Asperger's. No need to even look at other posts, which is quite sad. How he presents arguments, oblivious to username irony; cannot accept being wrong; does not understand others... I hate how easily it is to detect my kin, truly I do.

Manaban spent far too much time explaining this but you are the problem if you perceive everyone else to be. Simple as. On the internet, anyway. It is however true MAL is full of tweens/teenagers, and anime draws losers desperate for oppai/waifus. Idiots are everywhere. But that does not make you right. It is just never going to be good for discussion. And people will never agree since anyone willing to type for fun is going to be arrogant and opinionated enough to think themselves right.

If you are truly a nihilistic loner, realise that you will gain nothing from communicating with people and find solace alone. Otherwise you're just a hypocrite looking for attention. And this is from someone that has struggled like you.

Well, this IS the internet you know, you can pretty much be whoever you want to be here. Whether you're acting like yourself or putting on a persona, as long as it isn't breaking the guidelines of the site, you can't really do much to stop them.
People like to troll,
People like to be meaner online than in real life,
People like to be who they're not, (In a way)
People like to be mean,
and overall I think all of us here on MAL need proper human interaction.
But yeah, I can see where you're coming from, I usually like to joke around in game forums but give honest answers in these threads.

It could be that some people do not have distance and do not understand jokes as you say, but it can also be that the person who makes a joke is terrible at making jokes.

I am not really interested in checking if the OP is treated unfairly or not. I just thought that I can give a piece of advice to him and people who feel similarly that they can find forums where people can get warnings or banned for not being able to behave and that they don’t have to deal with shit just because it is the Internet and there are places where people are allowed to write whatever insulting things comes to their head. Whether people will make use of this advice or not is their choice.

I just thought that there may be anime fans here who are new to anime and who do not know that MAL is infamous in the anime community for having not so nice users/ allowing users to be not so nice and that there are anime fans that avoid MAL like the plague.

True,I have been in such situation once when I wrote review. It doesn't how well I'm trying to explain or communicate,it doesn't work.

The only solution to this is either they calm themselves down or just ignore them.I mean idk why anime community is also so aggressive, but I guess there must be some person why have the same thought with you, facing the same situation.

I guess, just relax and don't let them get into you would be the solution.

I mean, I mostly agree. A lot of it seems to come down to the fact that people can't accept different opinions and tastes. It never ceases to baffle me on here that people get so aggressive about certain anime, and that they care so much about what someone else is watching.

Like come on, who cares if someone only watches idol anime, or hates romance, or only likes 'casual' anime? It just doesn't matter.

Idc if someone doesn't like something I like and explains their opinion, but most people on here seem incapable of doing so politely and end up insulting each other. But heh, it's the internet, so what am I expecting really? :P

MAL (like most internet forums tbh) is full of edgelords who live for online arguments.
