- Late in 2016, we had the honour of singing with Colin Hay, the incredible talent behind Australian 80s band Men At Work. Hundreds came out to learn our backups to his smash hit "Overkill" at Brooklyn's The Hall At MP. We rehearsed the parts and then Colin came out to sing lead. And then he gave a private concert for everyone in the room (with Colin's approval we'll get those vids up too) If you love this one as much as we do, share it widely!
Colin's new album Fierce Mercy is due out March 3, 2017 on Compass Records. You can pre-order it at www.colinhay.com/ + check out his US tour dates here www.colinhay.co...
Keep up with us at choirchoirchoir.com. We are about to hit the West Coast (SF, Portland, Vancouver + LA) for some Choir! sessions. www.choirchoirc... Hope to see you there!

Colin Hay is not given enough credit!! This man is a legend! Thumbs up if you agree! I can't wait to see the movie about him!
Wow they are making a movie Tyler, Really,? i lived in Australia for most of the 80's his music is the background to my life, well men at work, midnight oil and Crowded house, all brilliant
saw it. great documentary. not to mention some 13 solo albums since 1987. he's incredible.
He get´s credit for sure!
I need 8 thumbs to give this 8 likes. ;-) I'm American, but those 3 bands are some of my favorites.
so true, but their was many more too,
I come back to this video every time I need to know things will be okay and there are still good people out there. 🥺 tonight is one of those night. Praying for things to change.
❤
I do too, even in 2024! This has some magical healing properties that I so appreciate. Because I love listening to this magical song sung by Colin and a choir.
Amen to this.
❤
Praying for you buddy, and all of us
"Ghosts appear and fade away." One of the best 5 seconds of music ever
❤
I wasn’t prepared emotionally for how beautiful this was. Truly amazing!
In many ways, it is better than the original.
It’s done this to a lot of us leaving us in tears.
I concur
Beautiful. I am at a loss for words. Just, beautiful
Just stumbled upon this and having a similar reaction. Tears are streaming down my face as I watch this incredibly powerful performance. Wow.
This song kills me every time. My anxiety. My depression. Made so stupidly beautiful.
CNend I think so. That impossible task of being okay. Swept away by being you.
Same here. Peace to you.
Wow, that's one heck of a statement. I agree with you but it's a heavy statement.
@@danacoleman4007 I agree but its the best suggestion I've gotten in Years 😀
before this i sang hello anxiety, but i love this one now
Australia is proud to have borrowed Colin for a while. He is a national treasure.
We are proud he is Scottish
He's from Scotland originally.
Tears streaming down my face to see and hear the beauty we as humans are capable of…
Nothing like people or choir resonating together ..very powerful
❤
This song is criminally underrated.
No it's not. All the good people in the world that know this song, love it. Who else needs to know or rate this song?
@@jasonbullmusicincorporated Yeh iam one of them love this song always have time and time again i see this silly word underrarted I have followed them since there 1st album they made it to America a Aussie pub band they made it
@@jasonbullmusicincorporated totally agree...
Underrated for who? I give you a thumb up but this songs is one of the tops 80's, buddy!
Agreed.. There are thousands.
Candy O by the Cars is another perfect one that holds ranks with gems like this.
40 years later and this song is still a masterpiece. Memories of a better time!
Better with age
A much better time...
"ghosts appear and fade away"
That's the magical moment in the song. I don't know why. But I'm right, right?
So right!
at least there's pretty lights... ;)
Funny you say that. It's when I got the chills.
Best part
Saint Sacrifice honestly it was all magical - and i don't believe in magic anymore.
Colin’s voice is like a fine wine. Gets better with age. Just saw him last tour. Even better in person.
Got goosebumps hearing how the choir's vocal arrangement embraced Colin's solo vocals. Gives the song a whole new dimension.
Me too
Is it normal to just start crying in the middle of this? Asking for a friend...
Tell your "friend" it's ok. ;-)
It's very common apparently. 😢
same here
Yep!❤
What guitar is he playing.?
Who else got the chills
+1
Each time when I hear his full voice
Every time
Every single time
Every time ofc
This arrangement brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Anxiety sucks.
Faz parte.
Choirs are just one of civilisation’s most treasured gifts. Humans at our best.
Agreed, have always felt so myself too!
Tout à fait.👍
I think everything Collin does is criminally underrated
Agreed matey,,, he's done some crackers.
Still has that voice!
Unique.
@@taxus750 and great
Anyone who's anyone knows this is the best Men at Work song.
uhhhh they were all amazing u better figure it out
Touching the untouchables for me
For Colin, it was never about the money. It was always about the music. I have always had incredible respect for this man.
I would have paid anything to be there ♥️.. this song hit so hard and makes a 51 year old man 😢
The words to the song Overkill are so powerful. It was just a pop song when I was a kid, But, now it has meaning.
My father said the same sort of thing. ""When i was a boy of 14, i could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when i got to 23, I was astonished
at how much the old man had learned in 9 years".
So much meaning as an adult
Ain't that the truth Mr. Tibbs. Such a glorious comment my friend!
Big time
Stunned by how great this is.
Colin Hay is one of the only singers i know that sounds better live his voice is honest and true
Another is Jeff Lynne. It’s 2020 and he sounds like 1978.
What an inspired treatment of this incredible song! The moment the audience began to sing, i did not see that coming. Thank you to everyone involved this project for giving me the chills (in a good way) and putting a smile on my face today.
Wow!! I was completely surprised! Gave me the chills as well... incredible !!
Every time i find this I suddenly got stuk and then, keep playing on repeat tenth of times.
Me 3.
Couldn’t agree more
I agree. I didn’t see that coming. But what a thrilling surprise.
I'm at the moment in a hospital. My fifth operation during the last 1.5 years. This song helped get my soul away from this place for a moment and rest. Thank you so much!
How'd it go?
Be well. Think good thoughts and embrace all of the good people out there in your life. Lastly, we wish you a fast and fully recovery along with decades of joy.
Bless you brother!!!
how you doin?
I am heading into my 3rd surgery tomm, and this video w Colin Hayes gives me such solace. I have a kindred spirit out there like me. Thank you for your
Post, and all my best to you!
Love this song, wasn't prepared to start crying when the choir started. Great performance.
I got choked up also. I've loved this song since I was a kid. To hear it in this format is pure joy.
Irrationally moved to tears. Amazing. Thanks, RUclips algorithm
Been listening and watching him perform for 35 years. Back home in Australia we are a cynical bunch but I consider this performance to be one of the best of Overkill. I also think he is actually singing better than ever. His voice seems to have more power. There are some pretty high notes and he gets there effortlessly. You can get a feeling for his pleasure in hearing the choir as they sing their section. He is just closing his eyes and sucking in the sound. Go Colin... Definitely do not fade away, mate. We won't let you.
he´s like wine......
Stephen in OZ he’s from Scotland 🏴
@@briandavis8939 Yes Colin is from Scotland. Born in 1953 and emigrated when he was 14 to Oz. men at work formed in 1978
@@briandavis8939 Men At Work were formed in Australia and will always be an Aussie band with a dash of Scotland..
Randy Maloney Yes but Colin Hay is Scottish rest of the band are Ozzy 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪😎
Wow... "Ghosts appear and fade away". A perfect song.
Come back sometimes to get chills again. That many people all singing "Ghosts appear and fade away," just sublime.
Or as Colin once told an audience: "Some drunk shouted out -'Hey mate - play the goat song.' I didn't know what he was talking about, then he said 'You know the one where the goats appear and fade away.'" One of many great songs he's written.
You chose the perfect word. SUBLIME!
I watched this at 2:46am... and quietly turned the tv off, knowing full well that nothing else would top this tonight. Great job guys.
Mike Aguilo this is magic, but i am watching this at 2.46 am as well
Read your comment and looked at the clock - and oops
how is this even possible, just popped up on my playlist at 2:46am
7:13am EST here.
2:35am for me
Holy Shit - - didn't see that coming. Pardon my naïveté, but I thought it was just a normal, innocent looking crowd & wow did they give it a nice kick. Thank you for sharing this gem of an original classic!
I wasn’t expecting that either!!
Absolutely. I saw "choir" in the name but had no idea what was coming.
I kind of knew what would be coming, but doggone, that looks like a heck of an enjoyable time!
I initially thought they were just there to listen too. Loved the choir's contributions.
You know, I've never heard a version of this song I didn't like - that's how beautifully composed it is.
Holy snapping buttcheeks batman I did not expect that at all!
As a little boy hearing this not sure back thing while I loved it so much , my history anxiety depression later on I understood why this was so important to me. I’m in tears listening to this .
Good God, I'm blubbering like an idiot. That was beautiful. I've always favored this song as my favorite 'Men at work', song.
Thank you for all the wonderul people joining here for something beautiful in a world that is on fire.
I was unprepared for the swell of emotions I associate with this song. What an excellent song.
Thank you Father God for Colin Hay : Thank you Colin Hay for the music: Thank you choir choir choir for making this happen . so love the switch @ 3:55 where the choir sings the chorus and Colin makes the vocal melody. .. wow Wow WOW makes me want to move to Australia, so i can join this Choir you are my kind of people.
That is simply one of the most heartfelt and wondrous things I have seen. Both happy and melancholy at the same time. Absolutely fantastic idea of using a choir .
Colin's unique voice is intact after all these years. A brilliant artist!!
The Chorus's "Ahhhhs" hit me like sweet tsunami that went through my soul, soothing me with an effervescent feeling.
Just beautiful- a group of strangers bonded in love for music and kindness- the positive energy in that room could power a city! That video is a persona of Canada! Maximum respect for our good neighbors to the North. Regardless of the current nonsense American Citizens stand with you!
This was in Brooklyn by the way
Tears pouring down my face. Those ghosts do appear and fade away. Bless your heart, Colin. Your words and music will always be in mine. From someone who only got as far south as London. ❤
I understand about those ghosts.. Past relationships gone bad that appear in the shapea of memories
Yep we all have the ghosts...Colin was brave enough to shine the light on them all those years ago. I remember seeing him sing this in pubs in Australia in the 1980's. Even then it would bring the crowd to it's feet singing at the top of their voices. $5 dollar entry fee and $2 dollar beers
Oh how gloriously beautiful
I could listen to this song a million times ,brings me back to the best time of my life and the woman i would never forget perhaps even after death
Man, that was fantastic. The chorus backup fit perfectly, and Colin Hay has lost NOTHING the last 35 years. He is so talented and sounds better than ever!
This man will never know how much he has done for me.
How, after a year, does this video not have millions and millions of views?!?!? I love that Mr. Hay agreed to participate in this. It shows how cool he is.
@caveman Versace people prefer liking pop like justin beiber and cardi B
Because of RUclips! It took 2 years for them to "suggest" this to me.
@@sarge6870 it just got suggested to me today
January 2020. 1.1 million views.
Maybe the choir doesn't fit with his unique voice? I love the choir, but this time, they all disturb listening to this great voice. Maybe if there were some harmonization to his voice, like with Bowie's Starman (that was really great!)?
This song was popular when i was in high school. We had NO idea then how good or important it was. It makes me cry today.
"Overkill" is definitely on the soundtrack of my life.
On my list too 😉
Ditto
Zach Braff, Is that you? ;)
Ditto
Every fucking line makes sense
Like it made sense 7 years back,
Don't know till when....
There's something deeply therapeutic about a choir singing with my favorite musicians. My soul is touched.
Todmobile performed the Yes song "Awaken" with Jon Anderson several years ago. It's beautiful! ruclips.net/video/d_Va3e_52TE/видео.html
Tonic for the soul
What an amazing experience it must have been for Colin to have all these voices singing back his song while he played all in perfect harmony. Beautiful all around.
Love it when humans come together for something cool . More please !
I don't have words to explain an emotion that I feel seeing this video
Thiago Marques it's probably gas
Same feeling here!
I got it too.
You don't have to. I'm a man who grew up in the 80's and I cried.
Yeah. I get the same feeling. Everytime I watch this I end up crying.
When I was a younger guy and really obsessed with myself, I thought it was fun going around breaking hearts. Until that one girl came along and broke my heart. It was the Summer that this song came out. I would spend these really lonely nights crying over her while listening to this song. Never take for granted anyone who cares about you because that's a ship that may never return again. If you don't think that's true, then just ask the lonely.
👍👍👍
well said brother
Ghosts appear and fade away. The chord progression on that line never fails to give me a chill.
Chills for me too. Such simple lyrics, the essence of humanity. I love this version.
Yeah, how does he do that?
@@jolkraeremeark6949 sus4 resolves to 7th and then to the tonic.
3:53 - Colin's face when he let the choir sings main melody. He felt the moment.
Colin hay is a bad bad bad badass cat, love his voice and his guitar playing is excellent just a awesome artist!!!
PAPA lickey!!!
This rendition put tears in my ears. 80's kid here.
I respect that after 35 years he forgives the crowd their guilty pleasure despite having played and heard this song thousands of times more than the audience... he doesn’t make it feel tired or act exasperated
Tears. Just copious amounts of tears. So much truth and beauty in this performance.
One of those rare "pop" songs from our youth that somehow take on deeper and deeper meanings as the years go by. My new favorite of this song.
Yup started as a typical Men At Work ballad. Over the years people began to understand what he was talking about
What a fantastic experience that must have been! I'd give pretty much anything to have been a part of that! Beautiful. Chills and tears!
Ghosts appear and fade away....finished a year in detox a year ago and this song more then any other nailed it.
For a few minutes, this video took me away from the insanity of the world, and brought me to a much better place. Thank you very much for posting this.
stan, proves your alive mate, good stuff ,
Me too Stan...me too.
Heck. I thought it was just me.
Agree
Stan me too 😊
Hay's little vibrato that emerges on sustained notes...something so fetching about it...
Rediscovered this song through this show...OH...WOW. So moving. Fabulous lyrics. I hope to see Hay one of these days. Where does he live now?
BRAVO.
Pretty sure he's a California resident nowadays. Has a wife, still does his thing from time to time.
4:20 that ''its just ooooverkill'' made me tearing up.
Hope you all doing fine in times like these.
The only things I am spreading are LOVE, PEACE and HEALTH.
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
I know We'll be alright.
A hug across the pond to you.
Greetings from USA. Much love.
I cried! Not gonna lie! Memories, and the angelic choirs voices…,
"Its times like these you learn to live again
Its times like these you give and give again
Its times like these you learn to love again
Its times like these time and time again"

When the choir sets in the first time, thats just magical..
Listening with tears streaming down my face. Absolutely beautiful.
Me too, Peter.
Before there was auto tune and pre-programmed music... There was talent. Amazing...
Well put
The more I watch this video the more I wish I was there.
I think that every time. How I am so jealous of those who attended and participated in such a beautiful moment.
I watch it nightly
That looks like a fantastic way to spend an evening. Better than an arena, that's for certain.
I believe this is Men at works masterpiece.
Definitely
Total chills. An absolute golden performance .
Me too - Chills everytime I watch it.
@@jeffj2495 black lives matter
Not sure how many times I've watched this performance but it blows me away everytime. Colin hay is a very special talent indeed.
I have come back to this song tonight for the same reasons as before. hope for health and peace.
This is the perfect rallying call for us all in these awful times , it WILL fade away ! We will overcome !
Well said mate.
Neil Phillips overcome what exactly???? You have an awful life?? Oh, master, please teach us......
Fred Neecha HA HA HA always one , how sad .
thank you
So Trumpdiot will overcome? NAH!....
You made me cry. Thank you all, and especially you, Colin for a beautiful moment. Love you all!
These lyrics mess with my heart and soul big time. I can feel every word that he sings. Because I have insomnia. And "I worry about the situations. Specially at night, when I walk the street,"
And when the chorus, a common folk chorus, sing solo, I just can't control myself: It's just so powerful and beautiful!
You,re not alone. This song has given me comfort for years. Keep trying to find good things every day.
@johnarber3358 thanks John.
One of the most underrated voices of all time. Its so easy for him to be that soothing.
I just discovered this and am blown away!
That was one of the most fantastic pieces of music I’ve ever heard, beautiful, had tears in my eyes near the end, take a bow all concerned 👍
This has to be the most perfect version of this song ever!! I loved it by the original MAW, fell in love with it more with Colins acoustic version (thanks Scrubs) and now this one has me in tears.
It fits with my depression and anxiety perfectly - overthinking, inability to sleep, fear of failure and so on. Things can get on top of me but I always have this song to fall back on to basically tell me it's ok and things "will be alright".
indeed, thank you SCRUBS.
Totally agree, this version brought me to tears, and the song itself fits to my insomnia problems and ghosts, in a way not applicable to me 30 years ago (I am entering my fifties)
Yes
Helps me to survive my night shifts :D
Yep, that Scrubs version made me go, "I thought it was only ME who loved this song!" (It didn't make the Top 20 in the UK). Zach Braff was a big fan, apparently.
I miss these times.
Best times ever...
Girls looked so great, music was best and beer was soooooo cheap.
At least here in good old germany...
Thank you Mr Colin Hay...Thank you People...Thank you for this moment of peace and beauty...✨
Best version of this song. So beautiful!
This song touches me so deep - even after listening a hundred times.
Me too. I get chills from this version - it is so good.
Wow as an old rusty kiwi surfer in the Philippines I've just got blown Away....that was fantastic...thanks my northern amigos, take a bow
I am very grateful to have grown up listening to sounds like this
That was B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!!!!!!!! Simply stunning!!!! It brought tears to my eyes.
Wow!!!.. that was so amazing.. so glad I just found this!!..crying right now.. no words..❤
One of the most underrated musicians and artis ever Colin Hay you ROCK my man!!
Not in America it appears, no wonder he moved there.
@@1kallay I know a lot of musicians who hold Colin in high regard. A lot of people know who Men At Work are and don't know who Colin is but Musicians definitely know who Colin is.
💯This song certainly takes me back to better times as a kid in 80’s. How far we’ve gone downhill as a nation. God forgive us in the USA for our many sins.
OH!!!! MAN!!!!!! THIS BEAULTIFUL
To the 439 people who disliked this:
It's ok to be hurt.
It's not your fault.
Heard him in the 80s voice is amazing!
@Just ice
I'm in a quirky mood today. So I'll do you a favour and introduce you to a concept, that might be strange and entirely new to you.
You might want to call it "Replying to what the other one actually has said".
You see, if you would have made the effort to read everything I've written in my original post, you would have found out, I never said, we all have "to like the same thing". I never implied, "there was no alternative or preference".
None of that. Not in the slightest.
I'd never rule out the possibility of criticizing what I've written.
You could have found it arrogant of me to imply, people who disliked that video might have been hurt.
You see, that would have been a valid point.
To which I could have answered, that in my experience people, who have to openly and publicly "dislike" something that doesn't harm anyone and won't affect them, tend to have been hurt. There is a difference in "not liking" a video and actually klicking the button to "dislike" it. But that's a whole other story, so let's not wander from the subject.
You might even have called me condescending for telling people whose stories I don't know, having been hurt was not their fault.
That would have been a fair point as well.
I could have had answered, I tend to give my fellow human beeings the benefit of doubt whenever I can, but that's also another story.
There might have been other issues, you could have pointed out. Lots of ways to go down nitpicky road ...
But you see, you didn't actually criticize anything I've written.
You just reacted reflexively.
My dear ice (I hope, you don't mind me calling you "ice", but it feels more casual), I don't know you.
But anyone can tell, something triggered you.
And since you are not referring to anything I actually have written, it is pretty clear, you hardly read my post.
3 lines. 18 words. 60 characters. And you hardly read it.
Yet the vague impression of an opinion, that isn't identical to yours, triggered you. Triggered you badly.
The mere possibility of me having written something, you don't agree to, made you reply. Made you reply hard.
It didn't make you read my post over again. Not at all.
You could not bring yourself to give it a second thought. No way.
But you had to reply reflexively.
And not only did you have to reply. You had to make a point.
"dictatorship"!
Writing things, saying things, doing things which might not resonate well with you, that is what "dictators" do.
Uhm ... no.
Earlier on I mentioned "Replying to what the other one actually has said".
I already replied to the "So you'd rather we all like the same thing and there was no alternative or preference"-part.
Let me now reply to the "Dictators also do that"
First off: uncalled for.
You might want to ask yourself, why you have to compare some random mild mannered post on the internet to "dictatorship".
Questions like this one usually lead to more concerning questions. There are experts, who can help those who really want to be helped just by listening and asking some more questions. Questions one might have never asked him/herself so far. These experts are not cheap. They charge by the hour and the hour is usually only 50 minutes. But working on oneself should always be worth it.
But let's get back to what "dictators" do.
Ice, my friend, I'm afraid, you don't know much about "dictators".
You've heard the word and it's on a list of terms and phrases you tend to use whenever you feel you have to "fight back". Which is a feeling, you have pretty often, haven't you? You hear or read something and you have to "stand your ground", don't you? More often than most people maybe ...?
Anyway, a "dictator" would never give a single f... about what you or all of us might like.
That's one of many indications of dictatorships: no f...s given about what you might like.
There are many more indications. The lack of possibilites to express, what you like or don't like, is just one of many.
Another dead giveaway for a dictator are harsh reactions.
In a dictatorship the answers to dissenting opinions are always as fierce as they come.
PLUS dictators tend to accuse the other side of exactly the thing they are doing themselfes. Like when every true coverage is "propaganda". Or when facts are "fake news".
Harsh replies, accusing the other side, ... do you recognize a pattern?
It's ok not to like things. It doesn't need to be excused. It doesn't mean you've been hurt.
Is it just me, or does this song get better and better, as it ages? This song is better in 2020, than it was in 1982, and it was good in 1982.
The U.S. tv show Scrubbs introduced me to this song.. it was so powerful to me. I fell in love with this song. I just stumbled on this version, brought me to tears. Thank you.
The most beautiful version of a most beautiful song. Just…wow.
Colin always sounds great but DAMN, got to give some huge props to the Choir / Back up singers ! Their timing was great & voices were raising the roof, gave me goose bumps
This is what music is all about , passion , delivery , and pure top brilliance of a great musician, singer, song writer , the jocks are tops, good man Colin, your not beat yet, nor never will be, bless u , for keeping music alive, 🏴🇮🇪☘️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Colin is a genius, his guitar a story in itself. Listen to this actual song, more than several times a day. If I could like C!C!C! more than once, I would.
@Hello David how are you doing
I love the mixture of older people who'd remember being young when this came out and younger people maybe having only heard it a few times.
